Bariatic Surgery: What to Expect After the Operation

Bariatic surgery is a general term for types of gastric surgery which encourages weight loss in patients with obesity. A bariatic operation is often a band surgery or stapling surgery which reduces the stomach capacity and also creates a stomach and intestine system that forces food eaten to bypass part of the smaller intestine, so that less fat is absorbed by the body. Obviously, bariatic operations are pretty drastic, and for this reason are usually only performed on healthy but obese adults who have tried other weight loss methods without being able to overcome their obesity.

Gastric or bariatic operations of any kind - whether the newer type of band surgery or the older stomach stapling surgery - are serious operations with risks and side effects. It is important to know what to expect after a bariatic operation. If you have an operation to deal with obesity, you can expect weight loss after your surgery. However, you will be required to adhere to a strict diet and exercise program in order to keep weight off. Bariatic surgeries do not guarantee that you will not regain weight and stay overweight. You should undertake a gastric operation only if you are willing to work hard to lose weight and maintain weigh loss, because a gastric operation is not a magic solution. It is rather a tool that can help you combat obesity.

After your bariatic operation, you will be in some pain, and you may be given painkillers to help with this. You will be helped to move right away in order to prevent breathing problems and blood clots which affect some patients after a bariatic operation. You will likely be given an X-ray soon after the operation to make sure that the gastric device inserted during the operation is in place and you will stay in the hospital for a few days.
