Is Gastric Bypass Surgery and Pregnancy a Deadly Mix?

Gastric bypass surgery and pregnancy are not always a good mix, and women of childbearing years who are considering having children may wish to consider their plans for the future before deciding on gastric bypass surgery. Women of childbearing age will be told to put off having children for several months to a year after having gastric bypass surgery because in the months after surgery, the body takes in far fewer nutrients. The rapid weight loss of these months may result in pregnancy that carries many risks. Women who are pregnant and not taking in enough nutrients risk giving birth to children who are born premature and risk suffering malnourishment themselves. Having children too soon after gastric bypass surgery may also interfere with the recovery after surgery.

Even women who have waited several months or even years after stomach stapling will need to take special precautions when they decide to become pregnant. If you are a woman of childbearing age who has had gastric bypass surgery, you will certainly want to talk to your doctor before deciding to get pregnant. Since those who have had obesity surgery usually take in much smaller portions of food and exercise in order to battle obesity, some lifestyle and eating changes may need to be made before pregnancy is considered a good idea.

The good news is that in the long run, gastric bypass surgery may be safer than obesity for women of childbearing age. Obesity carries a number of health risks for women of childbearing age, including the risk of complications in a pregnancy and the risk of altered hormonal levels. Obesity may also result in women with difficult pregnancies. Having obesity surgery and being able to become pregnant while at a healthy weight may actually result in a lower risk pregnancy.
