Diet After Gastric Bypass: Learning to Eat Again
The diet after gastric bypass procedures is certainly not for those who
have no will power. The eating plan that a patient has to follow after
obesity surgery is meant to do several things. First, it is meant to
help the patient heal effectively. For this reason, for the first while
after surgery, the patient can usually eat only liquids before slowly
being introduced to soft foods, then solid foods. Eating these sorts of
foods ensures that the stomach does not get stretched and irritated as
it heals from gastric bypass surgery.
After a few weeks of healing, gastric bypass patients must still stick
to a fairly strict menu plan, which stresses some foods while
eliminating others. For example, gastric bypass patients must stick to an eating
plan that ensures foods are eaten in small portions. This helps to
make sure that the stomach does not stretch out, undermining the surgery.
Also, any diet plan after gastric bypass surgery needs to include lots
of healthy foods rich in nutrients, as the smaller portions of foods
eaten after surgery make it harder to avoid vitamin and nutrient
deficiencies. Finally, it is important to have a healthy eating plan that
avoids sugary, fatty, and processed foods as much as possible. These sorts
of foods - and sugary foods especially - cause something called
“dumping syndrome” in gastric bypass patients. Dumping syndrome is caused by
eating refined sugar and has a number of unpleasant symptoms including
dizziness, abdominal cramps, fatigue, diarrhea, tachycardia, nausea,
and tremors. It can usually be avoided by a menu plan that eliminates
sugars and fats.
