Getting Gastric Bypass Insurance Coverage
Getting gastric bypass insurance coverage is a challenge. Many
insurance providers offer little or no coverage for obesity surgery. Even
those that do often have many restrictions placed on their coverage,
limiting the numbers of people who can make claims. There are a few ways you
can help ensure that at least part of your gastric bypass surgery will
be paid for by the health insurance you contribute to:
1) Find out what your policy does and does not cover. Insurance
policies and providers differ greatly so read your insurance paperwork to find
out what is and is not covered. Call your insurance provider and ask
for clarification. Even in cases where gastric bypass surgery is not
covered, many insurance providers make some exceptions.
2) Get a doctor on your side. A doctor can be one of your most powerful
allies for getting insurance coverage for your obesity surgery. This
is because many insurance providers require vast amounts of doctor
paperwork for coverage and often require that a patient be declared morbidly
obese and require that surgery be deemed a necessity before releasing
any money. A doctor who believes that you need obesity surgery and is
willing to help you can be your key to getting insurance money for
gastric bypass surgery.
3) Keep a paper trail. Most insurance providers require extensive
documentation of your condition to release money for obesity surgery. Some
require, for example, that patients have tried doctor-supervised
dieting for two years before trying gastric bypass surgery or require that a
patient has obesity-related health problems.
