Gastric Bypass Insurance: Is it Possible?

In many cases, gastric bypass insurance is not possible to fully cover
the cost of the obesity surgery. Few insurance providers at this time
fully cover gastric bypass surgery, due to the high rate of obesity and
the high cost of the surgery. Even some insurance providers that have
covered obesity surgery in the past have cut back or eliminated their
coverage because of the claims made on policies. This is a huge problem
as more people struggle with obesity. Few patients can afford the $25
000 to $40 000 price tag that obesity surgery comes with. For those
who have dieted and been unable to lose weight, gastric bypass surgery
offers a real solution to obesity. Not being able to find health
insurance coverage for the surgery is upsetting and frustrating.

The news is not all bad. A number of insurance providers do now
provide at least some coverage for gastric bypass surgery for those who are
considered morbidly obese and in those cases where gastric bypass
surgery is considered a medical necessity. Some experts think that this trend
will continue as insurance providers realize that converge for gastric
bypass surgery costs less than obesity in the long run in claims.

If you have health insurance, you need to check carefully to see how
much - if any - of your gastric bypass surgery could be covered by your
insurance. Coverage differs between providers as well as by policy, so
look closely. In some cases, gastric bypass is not mentioned at all
while in some insurance coverage policies it is clearly listed as a
procedure not covered. You may want to call your health insurance provider
whatever your policy states - some insurance providers have exceptions
whereby they do provide some coverage for obesity surgery.
