The Gastric Bypass Procedure: Who is it For?

The gastric bypass procedure, or stomach stapling, as it is sometimes
known, is not for everyone. It is a very expensive surgery - costing
tens of thousands of dollars - which reduces the size of the stomach
using surgical staples and then reattaches the smaller stomach to a
different part of the intestine. This reduces the capacity of the stomach to
the size of an egg, so that the patient feels full faster and so eats
less. The surgery also affects the way that food is absorbed by the
body, so that less fat is absorbed. This surgery results in weight loss
for most of the patients who take it. There is a specific type of
person who is suited for this surgery:

1) Those who are not squeamish. Gastric bypass surgery can result in a
number of unpleasant side effects, including nausea and hair loss as
well as pain and weakness. Like most surgery, it carries risks.

2) Those willing to work hard. Stomach stapling is not an instant
solution for those who are obese. After gastric bypass surgery, it is up to
the dieter to eat well and exercise in order to meet weight loss goals.
A gastric bypass operation helps with this, but it is not liposuction -
the surgery does not remove weight on its own.

3) Those who are in good enough physical shape. Like any surgery,
stomach stapling requires basic physical stamina to endure.

4) Those who are seriously obese. Stomach stapling is not a weight loss
solution - it is a surgery procedure for those who are morbidly obese.
Most doctors will not operate on those who have to lose less than one
hundred pounds.
