Gastric Bypass Revision

A gastric bypass revision is a surgery meant to repeat the gastric
bypass surgery. In many cases, patients who have had gastric bypass
surgery need to have the procedures reverse due to leakage or other
complications. Once they are healed, they may choose to get the gastric bypass
redone. In other cases, patients gradually gain back weight by eating
progressively larger portions of foods, which stretches out the stomach
again. In order to achieve weight loss again, revisions in the
original surgery are necessary again. In most cases, gastric bypass changes
are made by simply making the stomach smaller again.

There are several problems with a gastric bypass alteration. First,
gastric bypass surgery is not very flexible and is not meant to be a
procedure to be changed. For this reason, many surgeons refuse to make
revisions to gastric bypass surgery - even if a mistake of their own
resulted in unsuccessful surgery! Plus, all the risks and expenses of the
original gastric bypass surgery are present in a gastric bypass
alteration.

Obviously, it is best to do all you can to avoid having to get your
gastric bypass redone. You can do this by making sure that you research
the procedure and choose a doctor you are confident will perform a
gastric bypass that will not need any changes. Second, you can make sure
that you do not need to get the surgery redone by following your doctor’s
instructions, especially when it comes to food portions and the types
of foods you can eat. Eating foods that cause gas and eating foods in
too large portions almost guarantees that you will need to have changes
to the gastric bypass done, as these habits will stretch out your
stomach, often only in a few months.
