Communicating with Your Gastric Bypass Surgeon Can Save Your Life!

Talking with your gastric bypass surgeon may seem pretty obvious - you state that you want surgery and you listen to what he or she has to say. In reality, it is more complicated that. Your gastric bypass doctor, like any health care professional today, is very busy, so you need to be able to communicate quickly and effectively so that nothing important is overlooked. Also, if you are paying your doctor for his time, you will want to speak as effectively as possible so that you are not overcharged. There are a few ways to make sure that the time you spend speaking with your bariatric surgeon are as effective as possible:

1) Do your research beforehand. Reading about gastric bypass surgery ahead of time is a good idea because you won’t spend the limited time you have with your gastric bypass doctor asking questions you could have had answered elsewhere. Doing your own research will also help you ask better questions when you do meet with your bariatric surgeon.

2) Talk to every bariatric healthcare professional you can - not just your surgeon. Talk to your bariatric surgeon, but also talk to nurses, your family doctor, and other health professionals you meet. Not only will they offer you another view of the gastric bypass surgery - but they can also spend more time with you, in many cases, than your surgeon, who may be rushing to his or her next gastric bypass surgery.

3) Don’t feel bad about asking questions - and asking again. Obesity surgery is a huge undertaking and you need to make sure that all your questions are answered fully. If you feel you are not being listened to, walk away and find a bariatric surgeon who does answer questions.
