The Lap Band Surgery
The lap band surgery is a serious obesity surgery that helps those who
suffer from obesity accomplish weight loss, even when other weight loss
methods don’t seem to work. This type of obesity surgery has become
very popular in recent years as a possible solution to obesity. In this
obesity procedure, an adjustable and flexible lap band device is
inserted around the stomach, reducing stomach capacity and allowing the
patient to achieve weight loss by making the patient feel fuller faster.
After the surgery, the patient will be able to eat less comfortably and
so will be able to lose weight.
There are several advantages to the lap band procedure. Firstly, it is
laparoscopic, meaning that in obesity operation, a camera is used to
control the surgeon’s movements. This makes the operation shorter,
require fewer stitches, and - according to some experts - slightly less
risky than other types of obesity surgery. Plus, the lap band device is
fully adjustable and reversible, meaning that patients can get the device
altered for optimum weight loss. The fact that the device is adjustable
further reduces the risk of stomach leakage and permanent stomach
damage.
However, like any operation, this procedure has risks. The lap band
device can become dislodged or can lead to infection. In fact, because
it is adjustable, patients need to take care not to stretch their
stomach out after the operation - by eating foods that lead to gas. This
type of laparoscopic obesity operation, like any surgical procedure, still
allows for many complications and still carries many risks. In fact,
because it is laparoscopic, this obesity operation requires a very
skilled and experienced surgeon.
