Lap Band Surgery: Is it for You?

Lap band surgery has become a very popular form of weight loss operation because it is so flexible and non-invasive. Patients can often leave the hospital two days after the procedure and can return to normal activities quite quickly. The lap band technique has been shown to be effective in fighting obesity in those patients who have had little success with traditional weight loss methods. What is even more exciting is that the lap band technique, because it uses a flexible lap band device rather than staples on the stomach, is flexible and easily reversible, making this operation easier to adjust for patients’ varying lifestyles and various reactions to the procedure.

Deciding whether a lap band procedure is a good way to approach weight loss is not always easy. Experts recommend that those who seek the lap band technique do so only after other types of weight loss techniques have failed. The lap band operation, although less invasive that other types of obesity surgery, is still quite costly and does come with its own health risks, just like any other type of operation. Lap band surgeries are usually recommended for those with large amounts of weight to lose and for those who are in generally good health. Patients with a substance abuse problem or serious depression are often not considered good candidates for a lap band procedure.
